History Of The Colin Stephen Quality Handicap
The Colin Stephen Quality Handicap was first raced in 1870 as a Principal race over 14 furlongs, and saw Illumination claim the honours. Originally called the AJC Spring Stakes until 1938, the race has undertaken many different names including the AJC Queens Cup (1976, 1988 & 2006), the AJC Japan Trophy Race from 1989 to 1995, and the AJC Jubilee Handicap in 1977. It was first called the Colin Stephen Quality Handicap in 1938, the year after the former chairman of the Australian Jockey Club, Sir Colin Stephen, died.
The race was run as a weight for age event from 1938 to 1972, and found its status lifted to Listed in 1979. Nine years later the race became a Group Three status race, and converted to the metric system – 2400 metres – in 1972.
